ASCs: The Never-Ending Quest for Quality

Interview with: Regina Boore, MS, BSN, RN, CASC

The average age of an OR RN is 53 and two-thirds of perioperative nursing leaders plan to retire by 2022. There’s never been a more urgent and challenging time to recruit and retain qualified ASC clinical directors and their staff.

With an ever-increasing shortage of qualified personnel, ASOA’s EyeTalks Radio invites Regina Boore, Senior VP and Executive Consultant of Progressive Surgical Solutions, a division of BSM Consulting, to discuss the importance of sustaining a culture of commitment, accountability and discipline when it comes to building and managing quality ASCs.

Regina discusses the need to create and maintain quality ASCs and the major obstacles the industry faces.

“I’ve never seen a top-performing surgery center without the engagement of the organizational leadership.”

That being said, with rising competition among perioperative leaders in all surgical environments, including acute care, ASCs often cannot compete with compensation and benefit packages that the local hospital or health system offers. Generous sign on bonuses are becoming a more prevalent recruitment tool.

Insufficient time and budget dedicated to education and training continue to be major obstacles that ASCs face. Regina goes on to say,

“In the surgery center world, we staff to the schedule.  But we cannot do that at the exclusion of making sure that we provide the appropriate training and education for our staff. You just cannot be a top-performing center without an appropriate allocation of resources for staff development.”

With more than 40 years of clinical, administrative, teaching, and consulting experience in ambulatory surgery, join Regina on EyeTalks Radio to learn more about the challenges and what it will take to develop top notch ambulatory surgery centers with sustaining a culture of commitment for leadership, staff and patients.

As Regina affirms,

“Failure to invest in creating and sustaining a culture of commitment, accountability and discipline is an obstacle to quality.”
