Competency Assessment in Healthcare
As staff shortages continue, the competency of each healthcare professional is of vital importance for the safe and efficient function of surgical services. There is a general lack of understanding today regarding nursing competency and successful measurement of competency has proven elusive. This webinar will discuss widely accepted definitions of clinical competency and explore a theoretical framework to guide assessment efforts. Attendees will receive valuable resources to support the assessment of perioperative nurses’ competency.

Jim Stobinski, PhD, RN, CNOR, CSSM(E), CNAMB(E) is a nurse researcher, author and presenter with extensive speaking experience at the national level. He has been published in peer reviewed journals to include the AORN Journal, Perioperative Care and Operating Room Management, OR Manager and the Journal of Nursing Administration. He has nearly 40 years of operating room experience and his education includes a diploma in nursing from the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing and a BSN and MSN from East Carolina University. He earned a PhD in International Health Research from Touro University International for a study of competency and skill acquisition in perioperative nursing.
Jim serves as adjunct faculty at Nova Southeastern University and Wilkes University and is a guest lecturer at East Virginia Medical School. He is now the Director of Education at NIFA in Centennial Colorado; which is among the largest providers of training for Registered Nurse First Assistants (RNFAs). He maintains an active research agenda centered on nursing demographic and patient outcome studies.
