Over the last 33 years, I have had the privilege of visiting and engaging in some way with hundreds of ASCs across the USA and in Canada and Puerto Rico. e spectrum of the field is vast and disparities are immediately perceptible. e difference is not dictated by organizational structure (physician owned vs. hospital affiliated vs. corporate partner). Nor is it dictated by the scope of care (single vs. multi-specialty). Neither size nor location is the determinant. So what is the distinguishing characteristic?
