I made a quarterly visit to our management client, Arkansas Outpatient Surgery Center, in North Little Rock on 5/21/18. I worked with Andrea Garlapati, the Clinical Director, throughout the day.
This center has had a busy quarter. While they started out a pain center, they added podiatry to their scope of care. This meant the purchase and use of a new autoclave, new equipment and instrumentation, additional policies to ensure compliance, additional training of staff, and board meetings to approve privileges for anesthesia providers and the podiatrist as well as all of the new policies. The new procedures are working out great with excellent patient and surgeon satisfaction!
During this management site visit, I observed the surgical process with two patients, reviewed credentialing files, HR files and medical records.
Since they were built for their original scope of care as an ASC performing pain procedures, they are somewhat limited in space. Andrea is incredibly organized, and the picture below shows how she “picks” cases for pain cases. The storage unit is kept in the sterile core while still allowing for the appropriate hallway width for the fire exit.
Until the next quarterly visit, I will continue to support Andrea with participation in quarterly QAPI and Board meetings, completion of the monthly management update tool and provision of compliance support!
