President Trump Nominates Alex Azar for HHS Secretary

On Monday, President Trump announced his nomination of pharmaceutical executive Alex Azar as secretary of the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS). Azar served as general counsel and deputy HHS secretary under George W. Bush from 2001 to 2007, before leaving to become president of the US division of Eli Lilly and Company. His experience at HHS, coupled with strong relationships to Acting Secretary Eric Hargan and Vice President Mike Pence (Eli Lilly is headquartered in Indiana), gives supporters confidence that he’ll be able to lead a health care agenda that has been less than cohesive in the new administration’s first year. Nomination hearings have yet to be scheduled.
