NY ASC Symposium 2016

This year, Progressive Surgical Solutions was a proud sponsor for the 3rd annual NY Metro ASC Symposium, which took place September 14, 2016, at the New York Hilton Midtown.

This one-day seminar is devoted to ambulatory surgery centers in the tri-state area. It is focused on the most current and fundamental business, technological, regulatory, legal and clinical issues facing ASCs on a daily basis.

250+ attendees had some great sessions to attend throughout the day. Following the general session, Debra moderated a session called “What to Expect when you’re not expecting: Being prepared for a visit from a survey team”, in which there was much discussion of survey preparation and tips. There was a terrific presentation on HIPAA. The OCR has increased HIPAA investigations, due to a poor report on its performance from the OIG. 55% of the issues are due to internal issues rather than outside threats. Issues such as not shredding PHI, leaving laptops unprotected by passwords or biometrics and using passwords on networks that are too easy to figure out (such as ASC) were some of the examples of contributing factors to breaches that resulted in high fines. Another great presentation for ASCs on the east coast was by Naya Keyayes and two insurance representatives from NY who spoke to regional issues with third party contracting. A very informative day!

Following the welcome reception, Deb and Michael Kulczycki from The Joint Commission enjoyed dinner at Oceana in midtown Manhattan. They walked back to the hotel past the famous Radio City Music Hall!
